Kodi Subtitles Not Working? Fix Missing or Out-of-Sync Text

If Kodi subtitles are missing, start by confirming that a subtitle track exists and is selected. If subtitles appear but arrive early or late, check timing separately. These are different problems, and one “subtitle fix” will not solve both.

Use a video you own or are authorised to play. The steps below are documentation-based; subtitle menus and available options vary by version and skin.

Missing subtitles: check the simplest explanation

  1. Open subtitle controls during playback. Confirm subtitles are enabled and select an available track. Test another track if the file includes several.
  2. Check an external file. For a basic local test, put the video and subtitle in the same folder with matching base names, such as Sample Video.mkv and Sample Video.srt.
  3. Browse manually if needed. Kodi provides a subtitle-browsing option. Selecting the file manually can distinguish a discovery problem from a display problem.
  4. Compare a second known-good video. If only one title fails, investigate that video and subtitle pair before changing global settings.

Kodi supports embedded and external subtitles, including SRT, and documents these controls in its official subtitle guide.

Out-of-sync subtitles: constant delay or drifting timing?

If every line is displaced by a similar amount, try a small subtitle-offset adjustment during playback. Test dialogue near the beginning and later in the video.

If an adjustment fixes one scene but later dialogue is wrong again, stop treating the issue as a single constant offset. Check that the subtitle belongs to the same edit or release of the video. Different scene cuts can make a subtitle file unsuitable even when the title matches.

Record the original offset before experimenting. Change one value at a time and return to the starting point when a change does not help.

Language and readability checks

Verify the selected language before assuming the subtitle file is corrupted. For readability issues, distinguish between missing text, text in the wrong place and characters displayed incorrectly. A screenshot showing the symptom is more useful than describing all three as “not working.”

Do not make settings the default for every video until you have tested another title. An adjustment needed for one file can make the rest of the library harder to watch.

What to include when asking for help

Provide the Kodi version, device, subtitle format, embedded or external status, and whether manual selection works. Use a short, non-private sample description rather than uploading copyrighted video or exposing media-account links.

For repeated errors, follow our debug-log workflow. If the video itself is jerky rather than the text simply delayed, use the stutter diagnostic guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a subtitle download add-on?

Not for subtitles already embedded in a video or stored locally. Test those options before adding a new service.

Should I reset Kodi?

A missing subtitle on one file is not a reason to erase a whole configuration. Isolate the affected pair first.
