When Kodi has no sound, first determine whether the problem affects every application, every Kodi video or only one audio track. Then test the simplest audio path before changing surround-sound settings.
This guide covers a diagnostic workflow, not a guaranteed configuration for every TV, receiver or Android box. Keep a note of the existing settings so you can reverse each test.
Check the equipment outside Kodi
Play something in another application on the same device. Confirm the device and television are not muted, the receiver uses the intended input and the sound comes from the output you expect.
If nothing produces audio, start with the device or equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Changing Kodi settings cannot reliably solve an incorrectly selected receiver input or a wider operating-system audio problem.
Build a simple baseline inside Kodi
- Use a familiar local file. Choose media that previously worked. Try a second file to avoid diagnosing the whole installation from one unusual track.
- Check the selected audio stream. During playback, confirm that an audio track is available and that you are testing the intended one.
- Review the output device. Where Kodi exposes a choice, select the output that matches the actual connection.
- Temporarily test without passthrough. Record the original setting first. If decoded audio works while passthrough does not, investigate the receiver’s supported formats and the complete connection path.
- Reintroduce complexity gradually. Add the receiver or soundbar back into the test path one change at a time.
Kodi’s audio troubleshooting documentation explains the difference between decoded PCM audio and encoded formats. More advertised channels are not a universal cure for silence.
Check the entire HDMI chain
Write down the connection order: media device → television → soundbar, or media device → receiver → television. These are not interchangeable arrangements. The supported capabilities of one device do not establish that every connection in the chain carries the same formats.
Use the exact model manuals to check capabilities. If a simpler connection works, that gives you a useful comparison; it does not automatically prove that a cable or television is faulty.
Validate the result
After a change, replay the same test segment. Check dialogue, normal volume and a second file. If sound returns but video timing becomes wrong, record that as a separate symptom instead of changing several settings at once.
For an unresolved failure, collect a focused debug log. Before a reset or migration, create a recoverable configuration backup.
Frequently asked questions
Should I enable every passthrough format?
No. Select formats supported by your actual equipment and connection, not every option visible in a menu.
Why does one video play silently?
Compare its selected track with a working file. A file-specific failure needs different investigation from silence across the entire device.
